Today I am half way though the 1st trimester. YAY!
In less exciting news I had my first Dr.'s appointment today. I really want to deliver at a birthing center, hospitals are not my favorite place in the world and I feel that at a birthing center I will have more say in how everything plays out. When I found out I was pg I called my insurance company to find out what I needed to do if I wanted to deliver at a birthing center since the specific group I am in does not have a relationship with a birthing center but there are a few birthing centers listed in my policy book as a whole. The guy told me that all's I needed to do was get a referral from my dr, and there was no need to switch groups, BUT I only have till my second trimester so I needed to take care of it ASAP.
The next day I called the medical building I go to and talked to someone in administration about getting a referral to a birthing center, she made it sound like it was a common thing and that all's I needed to do was make an appointment to see my PCP, at the time I asked if it was my PCP or OB because I have been seen previously by the OB in the office and she assured me that the PCP would be the one that would confirm that I am pregnant and get me the referral.
I knew today’s appointment was not going to be much but I was hoping for at least a blood test. The nurse calls me back and says you’re here for a psychical right? Well I’m pregnant and trying to get a referral to a birthing center so if I need to a psychical for that I guess so. I get taken back into my room and see all the tools for a pelvic exam laid out on a tray, CRAP I just had that done in December, maybe I can talk her out of it. The dr comes in asks when my lmp was, how many pg test I’ve taken, the results, and if I’m having much morning sickness, she tells me how far along I am based on the info I told her and says she will write me a referral to see the OB and I should have it in 7-10 days. UH wait I don’t need a referral to see an ob even though HMO’s in general suck I can go to the ob without a referral I am here because I want a referral to go to a birthing center. She looks confused and dumb founded. I explain to her what the guy from the insurance company and the administration at this medical building told me, so she asks for the name of a birthing center and says she’ll see what she can do.
Tomorrow I have to call my insurance company again and see if someone else has more info on what I need to do. This dr may be able to give me the referral but 7-10’s puts me at about 8 weeks and with how long it takes to get into see a dr and than how long it takes for a referral, if she is not able to do it I will be cutting things close.
